Concept Sketch
These initial concept sketches are often only 2-3 minute drawings. The goal is to put the idea onto paper after it is seen clearly in the mind. The style of using a black pen and watercolor markers is about establishing a figure-ground relationship between buildings and the landscape. The goal of the rest of the project is to preserve the freshness of this idea.
Presentation Sketch
The goal of more detailed renderings is to offer a vision of the look and feel of a project after it has been worked out in detail using 2D drawings and 3D modeling. These often using the model as the underlay, but bring the presentation of the design back to the illustrative style of the original sketch.
Renderings
The goal of computer-aided rendering is to preserve the look and feel of the concept design sketches, through careful control of palette and colors. In this way there is a continuous progression from the concept to the realistic image.
Recently, it has become possible to take initial renderings and develop these with AI, utilizing concept sketches to assist with final photorealistic renders, such that the result is consistent with the designer’s intent.
