When I opened the Figure Ground Art Gallery opened in July of 2021, there hadn’t been an art show in Seattle for over a year. I wanted to support the flourishing community of representational artists working in traditional media, and they flocked to the opening; I had unleashed a flood of desire to socialize and celebrate art. Over the next several years, our gallery stood for quality curation and enthusiastic support for artists. We also sold some art.

I had started my architecture practice several years prior, and the two businesses remained separate, until cultural projects began to dominate. I asked: what if we offered design services and curation services under one roof? New significant projects demanded new significant partners, but our relationships to artists became a huge asset. The “collective” was born.
